Buju Banton Hires New LAWER

Incarcerated reggae star Buju Banton has switched attorneys and hired Chokwe Lumumba to continue his fight against federal drug and gun charges.

A Tampa jury found Buju guilty last year of two drug-related charges and a gun charge. The trial judge, however, tossed the gun charge and sentenced the musician to 10 years in prison.

David Oscar Markus, the Miami attorney who represented Buju through two weeklong trials and a complex yet unsuccessful appeals process, confirms with New Times that he’s moving on from the case.

“I will always consider Buju my friend and my brother and I think of him every day,” Markus wrote in an email. “It pains me that he is in prison. I truly hope that he gets some relief.”

Buju’s new attorney, Lumumba, is currently waiting on the official paperwork to go through but expects to delve into the case and meet with Buju at a Miami federal penitentiary in the coming weeks.

“We intend to move as fast as we can,” Lumumba says. “In terms of how fast the court will move, it’s hard to say.”

It’s too early to determine Lumumba’s exact strategy for appealing the case. He and his team will review every aspect, from the history of the government’s snitch to the handling of the gun charge by Judge James Moody.

Markus, Buju’s first attorney, focused much of his effort on tearing down the credibility of the government’s only witness, Alex Johnson, a felon with financial incentives to get Buju arrested. Markus also argued that Buju was entrapped and that the case was plagued by prosecutorial vindictiveness.

Lumumba is sure to bring a different dynamic to the courtroom. A civil rights activist and community organizer for four decades, Lumumba is based in Mississippi. He’s also on the City Council of Jackson, Mississippi.

In the past, Lumumba has worked on cases involving Tupac Shakur, Black Panther Assata Shakur (a step-aunt to Tupac), and Lance Parker, a black man accused of assaulting a white truck driver during the 1992 Rodney King riots in L.A.

One-drop reggae is Here to stay

Whoever declares that one-drop reggae is dead needs to think again as the recently released Yard Rock riddim, a House of Hits project, shows that the genre is just ready to scale new heights.

Produced by the trio of Omar ‘I-mar’ Pickett, Elvis ‘Fleego’ Grant and Damian ‘Tef’ Forbes, this project has emerged as a contender for one of the top reggae rhythm in the year 2012.

The rhythm kicks off with the ice-cream smooth Feels Good, a duet performed by Prophesy and Stream. Prophesy is one of the most accomplished singers on the local reggae scene and he shows the full range of his amazing voice on this love ballad, Feels Good, where he combines with the super-talented Stream. The two have great chemistry and you can hear both artistes bleeding all over the track as they sing about the sweet caresses of romantic love. This single is the standout track on the riddim.

Nesbeth’s Rasta Take Over is an excellent addition to Nesbeth’s great repertoire of songs where he sings a song about a Rastafarian winning the love of a girl with the chest-thumping boast . He sings: ah rasta tek over yu heart/used to act tough, but now mi get yu soft/used to serious, but mi mek yu laugh. Over the years, Nesbeth has evolved into a brilliant writer who paints great portraits with his words.

most resonant voices

Blessed with one of the most resonant voices in the industry, Turbulence is in his element on Your Love and his passion erupts all over the track as he sings about the love of his life.

Cen C Love has emerged as one of the fiercest young reggae voices in the game today and she is on her game with the evocative Battleship which draws metaphors between love and war. The red hot rookie, Droop Lion, has one of the most commanding voices and he uses his marvellous talent to great effect on That’s How My Love Is. He recently signed a recording deal with House of Hits and here, he shows why he is so highly regarded with a real monster of a song, one of the standout songs on the rhythm.

Lady G is one of the biggest female dancehall acts that Jamaica has ever produced but as the years have passed, she has mellowed and matured into a talented vocalist in her second act as a reggae artiste. Blessed with stunning good looks and an incredible figure, Lady G still radiates a voluptuous sex appeal that gives added meaning to the imagination of men as she promises her heart – and other delights – on I Love You.

There are useful songs such as Lymie Murray’s Baby I Love You and Blaq Capone’s Closer that round off this wonderfully produced riddim project. The singles were recently released on iTunes and a host of other download sites. Go get it, you won’t be disappointed.

Charities accuse Rihanna of ‘sanctioning’ violence.Says she still love Chris Brown.

The singer Rihanna was last night accused of “sanctioning” domestic violence after she conceded she still feels “protective” towards an ex-boyfriend who was charged with assaulting her three years ago.

In an interview to be broadcast in the US tonight, Rihanna insisted the rapper Chris Brown “made a mistake” and “needed help” when, according to police reports, he punched her in the face, smashed her head against a car window and bit her following an argument on the eve of the Grammys in 2009.

Charities last night criticised her stance. One said she was in danger of “reducing savage attacks to the seriousness reserved for kiss-and-make-up stories in glossy magazines”; while another called for an end to “sticking-plaster policies” in pop culture’s attitudes towards domestic violence.

Erin Pizzey, the campaigner who pioneered aid for abused women by setting up Britain’s first refuge centre for victims, added: “This sends out a very dangerous message to teenagers that roller-coaster relationships with violence-prone personalities are edgy and exciting. They’re not. The relationship is toxic and unhealthy. Both are in need of help and that is the message that young people should be receiving.”

In the interview with Oprah Winfrey, Rihanna said that the assault had left her in “a weird, confusing space”. Conceding to still harbouring feelings for her former boyfriend, she added: “I lost my best friend – like everything I knew switched in a night, and I couldn’t control that. He made that mistake because he needed help. Everybody’s gonna say he’s a monster without looking at the source. I was more concerned about him.”

But Vivienne Hayes, chief executive of the Women’s Resource Centre, said yesterday: “Rihanna’s case demonstrates the emotional complexities felt by women locked in abusive relationships. It is common for victims to blame themselves for violence perpetrated by their male partners. Whatever the nature of the argument, [Brown] chose to beat her up. He has to accept responsibility for that choice. And we need to stop society allowing us to normalise such behaviour.”

Corey Todd claims Vybz Kartel will be freed

Though embattled Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel may be experiencing several downfalls as he awaits trial or separate murder charges but his long-time business partner continues to ensure that the deejay’s brand will continue to upgrade.
American entrepreneur, Corey Todd reunited with Vybz Kartelthis past May after several months of communication. The prominent public figures had been at odds since severing business ties in May 2011 due to alleged threats that Kartel made towards Todd. However, a year following their split and Todd’s experimentation with music management, the American businessman has once again joined forces withVybz Kartel as they aim to introduce several new products and also seek to re-invigorate the popular Street Vybz Rum brand.
Speaking publicly for the first time since their reunion, Todd promised big things resulting from his renewed partnership with the self-professed’Worl’ Boss.’

“We’re working back together, we’ve definitely mended fences,” Todd toldTVJ’s Entertainment Report.

“Some things were said and we just squashed it because at the end of the day, we both know that the two of us have done things in Jamaica that nobody has ever seen, so Round 2 very soon.”

Due to Kartel’s current legal situation, ensuring that this partnership flourishes could take much more work than ever before. However, Toddemphatically believes that the former Portmore Empire leader will beat his murder cases and emerge as a more popular entity.

“He is going to beat this…don’t believe everything you hear, he is going to beat it, and when he comes out he is going to be the biggest thing Jamaica has ever seen,” Todd said
