REGGAE artiste I-Wayne is never afraid to speak out, putting to music what he sees as the ills of society. Therefore, it stands to reason that his own music fraternity is not immune to his potent criticism once they are not in balance — a word he uses frequently during this Splash interview and generally in life and on stage.
Speaking following the release of his new album, Life Teachings, the conscious crusader noted that his absence from the music scene over the past few months was deliberate.
According to I-Wayne, who released his first CD Lava Ground in 2005, followed by Book of Life two years later in 2007, he took the time out to take stock of the market.
Using his trademark metaphor-rich language, the singjay explained that in addition to allowing his previous works to “soak” into the skin and brains of his listeners, he was in no rush as he is a firm believer in natural order, therefore nature must take its course.
“I would never want to crowd up the field like me see some man doing. Furthermore, the music is full of filth and that seems like what the masses was craving. So me move out the way and mek dem gwaan soak up the filth until it reach up to dem neck and a stifle dem,” he explains.
The artiste who is known for tracks such as Can’t Satisfy Her, Living In Love, Life Seeds and Need Her In My Arms, adds that for many, the nastiness in the music is enticing, but at the same time it is realised that this cannot continue as we must protect the children and future generations.
I-Wayne notes that the music also suffers from a lack of creativity, with the majority of the players doing the same thing. “People a gaze, dem a lose the vibes. If you check it out everybody deh pon swag, rum, drink and drunk, so di ting mus pop dung,” he tells Splash.
He explains that his purpose is to bring sanity amidst this turmoil, and that comes across in the themes explored in his music, which is generally replete with messages usually rooted in Rastafari.
“Everyone can’t be nasty and corrupt, that’s why I just stay calm and focus on what is right, careful not to rush into things — when you rush you must crash into the obstacles out there,” I-Wayne says.
With his album just out, the artiste says along with his Loyal Soldiers management team he is concentrating efforts on promotion as well as some overseas assignments starting early 2012.
Singjay Gyptian might not have won at the ‘Best New Band in the World’ contest from MTV Iggy, but the artiste did come out on top performing in New York’s Times Square for fans across the globe.
The artiste secured a spot among the top 10 competing to become MTV Iggy’s ‘Best New Band in the World’. The MTV Iggy website said: “At MTV Iggy headquarters we scour and sift through the Internet to find the newest, hottest music from around the world. We compiled the most exciting bands we discovered and ask you, our readers, to crown the best over a six-week voting period.”
Gyptian competed against Australia’s Angus and Julia Stone, Pakistan’s Atif Aslam, United Kingdom’s Ghostpoet, Venezuela’s La Vida Bohème, United States’ Skrillex, Mexico’s Ximena Sari-ana, Malaysia’s Yuna, New Zealand’s Zowie and Korean girl group 2NE1. The contest amassed four million votes coming from fans from 168 countries.
Korean group 2NE1 triumphed over the pack flying to New York to MTV studios at Time Square to perform for fans across the globe. 2NE1 was joined by Gyptian, Yuna from Malaysia and La Vida Boheme from Venezuela. The concert was streamed live online on Monday on mtviggy.com and was shown on MTV’s giant jumbotron screen at Times Square. The show was hosted by MTV VJs Suchin Pak and Sway.
hottest musical exports
During the live performance VJ Suchin Pak called Gyptian, “One of Jamaica’s hottest musical exports in recent years.” Fadar Magazine’s former editor Julianne Shepherd noted that Gyptian’s Hold Yuh was popular on New York radio stations for two years. For the show Gyptian performed Beautiful Lady, Nah Let Go before ending with his smash hit Hold Yuh.
Speaking recently, Gyptian’s manager Ivor Ruddock said the notice from MTV was something that would boost Gyptian’s career. “Indeed, it is a privilege because they choose from different genres and different countries. It is a good look,” said Ruddock.
Gyptian is also scheduled to perform at the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations at Times Square in New York City. He will be one of the headliners slated to perform on MTV’s coverage of the New Year’s celebrations on December 31. Regarded as one of the largest New Year’s celebrations worldwide, more than two million viewers on average view the Billboard screen in Manhattan for all the performances and happening during the celebration preluding the traditional dropping of the ball at midnight.
Gyptian climbed the Billboard and local charts with Hold Yuh last year. The song was remixed by rap star Nicki Minaj. Gyptian spent some time in the United States recording songs for an album scheduled for release next year.

Jamaicans will elect a new government on December 29. Prime Minister and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Leader Andrew Holness announced the date in Mandeville, Central Manchester, last night where thousands of Labourites gathered for a mass meeting.
Nomination day will be December 12.
“Remember, I told you we were not going to trouble your Christmas,” Holness told the crowd just after announcing the date. “I want you to have a happy Christmas, a merry Christmas. So we break for the Christmas period, but by the 28th you back on the road, and by the 29th you put your vote in the box, happy New Year, government in place, back on track, ready for work, ready for progress, ready for development, ready for a positive future.”
Holness wants mandate
Holness, who became the country’s ninth prime minister in September, has long signalled he needed his own mandate and would be seeking that from the people.
In announcing the date of the poll, Holness said: “Green light time.”
He then said, “Yuh ready for the teacher?” which was followed by the song “Teacher, teacher, a beg u ring the bell”. And he did.
“I checked with the director of elections and he told me that the new list is now published,” Holness said while adding he was unwilling to call an election and not give more than 40,000 newly enumerated people a chance to vote.
“We call elections when we are ready and we are ready,” he said, noting that the PNP has been calling for the election.
Holness, during the the JLP’s annual conference in Kingston last month, said there were uncertainties relating to governance that needed to be resolved this year.
On that occasion, he teased the crowd and vigorously shook the ‘freedom bell’ as if he would call the election. Then, the thousands of Labourites urged him “call it, Andrew, call it”. But that was not to be. He opted instead to stall the announcement until last night, which effectively ended any chance of the polls being held before Christmas.
As he went to the podium last night, Holness said, “This is simply amazing.”
And before he could utter another word, the crowd shouted, “Call it, Andrew, call it.”
He did not immediately satisfy their wish but would dance with them as the sound-system operator played the Black Eyed Peas’ I Gotta Feeling.
“You have all come to the centre of the island to hear the date when Jamaica would march on to victory with the Jamaica Labour Party,” Holness said.
Pole position
The general election will be contested for the first time in 63 constituencies up from the usual 60.
The governing JLP has said it intends to win 43 of those seats but the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has dismissed that assertion as a pipe dream, saying it was in pole position to win the election.
The last general election was last held in September 2007 with the Golding-led JLP winning 32 seats while the Portia Simpson Miller-led PNP captured 28.
It was the narrowest election victory since Universal Adult Suffrage in 1944, but nonetheless secured the return of the JLP to power for the first time since 1989 when Michael Manley’s PNP trounced Edward Seaga’s JLP 45-15.
In 2007, the JLP secured a total of 410,438 votes or 49.97 per cent of all ballots cast while the PNP captured a total of 405,293 votes or 49.35 per cent of all ballots.
This time around there will be just over 1.6 million Jamaicans on the voters’ list, an increase of more than 300,000 over the list which was used for the 2007 poll.
The latest Gleaner-commissioned Bill Johnson national poll show both parties locked in a statistical dead heat approaching the election. Some 29 per cent of Jamaicans say they would vote for the JLP while 32 per cent would vote for the PNP.
The poll, conducted on November 5, 6 and 12, has a margin of error of plus or minus four per cent.
In October, the poll found that with the Holness bounce, 31 per cent of Jamaicans would vote for the JLP if elections were called then, while 37 per cent said they would vote for the PNP.
While still behind the PNP, the JLP had gained six percentage points since June while the PNP had gained two, and the gap had closed from 10 percentage points to six.

The dancehall star has reportedly escaped from jail…
11:30, Wednesday, 30 November 2011
Dancehall star Vybz Kartel has reportedly broken out of prison in his native Jamaica after holding an officer at gunpoint.
Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, allegedly started a riot at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre, where he was being held whilst under investigation over his possible involvement in up to seven murders.
It is reported that Kartel and several other prisoners managed to take control of the prison shortly after 1am local time this morning (30/11/11), taking clothes and keys from guards before escaping in a prison maintenance pickup truck at approximately 1.45am.
One police officer is thought to have died of a heart attack during the escape with at least twelve others injured, including two who were shot with guns apparently smuggled into the prison ahead of the raid.
The Force Commissioner of Jamaica’s Criminal Investigations Branch has confirmed that Kartel, who has previously worked with the likes of Eminem, Jay-Z and Akon, is on the run and that he and the other escapees are now on the island’s most wanted list.
At 12.20pm GMT today (30/11/11), a tweet purporting to be from Kartel’s Twitter account hit the micro-blogging site, cryptically just saying “Ahoee’.
It has yet to be confirmed whether the tweet was genuinely sent by Kartel, or whether his account has been hacked.
